This is so sound thinking in my opinion, but what about those that have been fully disillusioned by people claiming to promote Christianity and instead, are roundly promoting themselves. The encounter recorded in Acts comes to mind:
I believe his particular distortion was having people pay to receive the gifts of Christ. Actually mentioning this makes me wonder if this story was discussed during the Age of Indulgences. And wonder if that is not what is brewing in modern day America’s master of Simony, now inhabiting the White House.
