MOTHERHOOD UNDER ATTACK
Should the State engage in medical malpractice?

The oppression of civil liberties by the Texas Legislature is particularly egregious. Why is the “religious” right entitled to take control of women’s bodies by pressuring the legislature to prohibit a mother from seeking an end to a life-threatening pregnancy?
Texas Law allows the State to step into the intimate life of its citizens.
As a male I do not carry a fetus to term and have no right to impose my views on women.
Two thirds of Texas State senators are male. Seventy three percent of the elected Representatives in the Texas House are male. The Governor of Texas is male. The Texas Lieutenant Governor is male. Seventy eight percent of Justices in the Texas Supreme Court are male. What equips these males to decide on matters that their bodies will never experience?
I do not bear the emotional and physical strain that a mother endures and neither do the above-cited public officials. But I do see the anguish that abortion cases are bringing to those that I know, women young and old.
I do not go to the Legislature when I need medical treatment. Why is the Legislature meddling in medical affairs that it is eminently unqualified to judge?
What moral right does the religious-right endorsed and supported GOP wing of the Legislature have to arrogantly assume that only the Texas Legislature has the needed competence to weigh-in on matters of health, especially obstetrics, especially when the life of a woman is at stake? When the integrity of a nuclear family is at stake?
Placing a mother’s life at risk is tantamount to physical assault. And if the risk proceeds to a subsequent fatality, who will bear the responsibility for this violence and murder?
Why do we allow this moralistic coupe based on religious zealotry to usurp the scientifically established responsibilities of the medical profession? Are we seeing the rebirth of the Dark Ages of old? What happened to the inalienable rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness that all citizens were promised?
We have a mother carrying a fetus with a lethal fetal anomaly that threatens her future fertility and even her life. How can we allow the State to risk her life? How can we risk the future of her other two children that may become orphans? How can we deny a husband his wife and companion through widowerhood?
Even if the mother survives, she will be criminally and civilly penalized under current law. Why are we inflicting unnecessary pain and suffering on this family already suffering the agony of considering ending her pregnancy? Why is the State bringing suffering not only to this nuclear family but to relatives and the broader community of friends and neighbors? Why is it necessary for the State of Texas to meddle in private matters? Why is insanity ruling our day?
What is the meaning of the “pro-life” meme of the religious right, when through its incompetent actions, it condemns a pregnant woman to death and denies small children of their mother? When it denies a husband his wife and companion? When it denies a community one of its members?
Is it not time for the State of Texas to backoff from meddling in medical affairs that are best left to physicians?

You ask why? Because they can, and that’s what fearful, chauvinistic, phony-holy supremacist bullies love to do--exert more and more power over others. Vote them out--including the Texas Supreme Court “Justices”-- they are elected, they do not have life tenure.
Must thank you as a daughter, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister of women. Your voice is one of reason and humanity in this issue.
