SECESSION?
What are they talking about?

The article said there were calls for Texas to secede. Hmm...
Thirty six percent of Texas net revenue came from the Federal Government in 2016. The secessionist government would have to fund all current federal functions, such as the 15 departments represented in the President’s cabinet and the various agencies authorized by Congress, on 64% of its former overall state budget. Texas would have a border with the US and Mexico to manage. There would be no FEMA disaster relief; no land, sea, air, or space forces to help the seceded state.
Texas has no state income tax. How would its businesses and residents respond to the massive taxation required to fund the functions of the seceded Texas government?
How would financial transactions, including pensions, insurance plans, and more, function in the seceded Texas?
Who would protect residents’ civil rights and guarantee non-discrimination based on race, ethnicity, sex, gender, religious beliefs that are now protected largely by federal law?
There is no invasion of Texas by armed immigrants. They bring hope for a better life. The weapons we see are wielded by law enforcement, vigilante groups, and by the criminal cartels that traffic the illegal drugs that the citizenry consumes.
Inflammatory rhetoric by the predecessor to the current President resulted in the mass shooting in El Paso in 2019 leaving 23 Americans dead. It is dangerous for Texas politicians to inflame the citizenry with invasion rhetoric. Who benefits from this talk of invasion and secession except the media and politicians seeking enhanced income?
Would it be more productive and effective for Texas politicians who say they want to secure the border with Mexico, to pressure the Texas’ Congressional Delegation to support the Immigration Reform legislation that the GOP currently blocks?
Does secession make sense?

I miss Rodney King: "Why can't we just get along?"
Excellent post! Thank goodness there is at least one adult in the state.
