I walk my 5 yo granddaughter home from kindergarten on Wednesdays. This week as we pulled my 13 week-old cavapoo in her little carrier behind us, she asked with that very sincere curiosity only a five year old carries: "Is a puppy born a boy or a girl, or do parents decide?" I was struck by her rudimentary understanding that something about being a boy or a girl could possibly be something someone else decides - a construct, not an identity born strictly by anatomy. She has two siblings, she knows about different anatomies ... and yet, "or do parents decide?" Who gets to decide? I love the question.
